After spending a couple of days in Instanbul, we boarded our motor coach and started the second leg of our Turkish Tour. We headed south along the European coast of the Sea of Marmara to the Dardanelles strait. We stopped for lunch at the town of Gelibolu where a pistachio vendor was glad to see a busload of tourists.
After lunch our motor coach was loaded on a ferry for a quick trip across the Dardanelles strait to the Asian side of Turkey.
A ferry leaves every hour and as we headed to Asia we meet another ferry heading for Europe.
After a 20 minute ferry ride we arrive in the port of Lapseki on the Asian side of the Dardanelles strait.
A statue of Pegasus, the winged horse, in the town of Lapeski.
We traveled a short distance from Lapeski, with winged horse, to the site of the ancient city of Troy, with a Trojan horse.
In Greek mythology, Homer's Iliad relates the story of the last year of the siege of Troy. The site of Troy was thought to be just a myth, but in 1868 German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann uncovered an ancient city that is now thought to be Troy.
Walls of the old city.
A ramp leading to the city gate.
The Amphitheater of Troy.
Mary inside a modern version of a Trojan Horse.
After a visit to the site of Troy, we are back on the motor coach and heading to our hotel. Some of the sights on our way to the hotel.
A welcome sign at Çanakkale where our hotel is located.
We are greeted at our hotel in Çanakkale by some very colorful people.
Çanakkale is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy. The "wooden horse" from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront.
Çanakkale has a beautiful seafront walkway that includes colorful figures for the young people (and some older tourists).
Finally, a real horse.
Fishing is a popular pastime along the seafront walkway.
The view from our hotel room as the sun sets over the Dardanelles.
We are greeted by a beautiful morning in Çanakkale as we prepare to travel to Izmir on the next leg of our Turkish Tour.
